Unspoken: A Story from the Underground Railroad

Unspoken: A Story from the Underground Railroad Story and Illustrations by Henry Cole 2012 Age range: 5 and up Unspoken takes place in a time of great cacophony during the Civil War, however, Henry Cole takes the reader to where sound is not permitted - to a world where a young girl discovers a runaway slave and helps that person by bringing food and staying silent. Cole’s black and white drawings are stunning in the bleak backdrop of the Civil War allowing to imagine that time period without sound-life will change and fluctuate and appeal to other senses but not sound.

More importantly a child will understand that one act of kindness-no matter how small or simple - can have a profound effect on a person’s life. A Bookish Decree: A thought-provoking and fascinating way to introduce 19th century history to a young child.
