This Is Your Time
This is Your Time Written by Ruby Bridges 2020 Age range: 10 and up Ruby Bridges an American icon of the civil rights era has interwoven historical events of the 1960’s with 21st century experiences to let this generation of children know that they are important in bringing about a much needed change. Ruby Bridges tells her story of how she was a trailblazer as the first African American child in 1960 to be integrated into an all-white elementary school in New Orleans.
She writes: “ I did not yet know that I had stepped into the history books.” However, she was not welcome at first: “I had been so excited to meet and make new friends at school.” But she was met with threats and hateful signs.
Ruby Bridges’s words today that reflect on her 6 year old self are profound yet show a reality: “they had never met or even seen me…so how could they know what kind of person I was…I was black, and that meant I didn’t matter." yet, she had a teacher Barbara Henry who was there for her everyday…
”and the two of them mattered to each other.”
Ruby’s words are moving for this day and everyday as she says with conviction:
“I believe racism is a grown-up disease, and we ‘adults’ must stop using you, our kids, to spread it.”
Ruby quotes Martin Luther King Jr.
“You only need a heart full of grace.”
She is so right.
A Bookish Decree: timely, formidable, and paramount.
