The Day You Begin (By Jacqueline Woodson, Illustrated by Rafael Lopez)

Published in 2018

The use of the ruler is various pictures throughout The Day You Begin is an interesting concept. When thinking of a ruler one can associate it with measurement-am I good enough, is it possible for me to accomplish this, how do I compare to other kids in my class? In the book, Angelina walks into her new classroom with a realization that no one is quite like her, kids in her class tell of fantastic vacations over the summer and bring in summer keepsakes. Angelina realizes that other kids in her class are using measurements as they go through their lives as well. When our heroine bravely stands before the class to tell of her summer she realizes “that no one is quite like you until the day you begin to share your stories”-and she does with the realization of what she has in common with her classmates, and also what she does not to make her unique.

A Bookish Decree: breathtaking vibrant pictures that shows a celebration of uniqueness
