A girl and her family are heading out for a hike to Hickory Hill. As the family leaves the city the girl notices many tall trees, so tall she cannot see the sky. On the hike the girl befriends a toad noticing how the amphibian blends in with the environment.
She also learns about woodpeckers and how they peck at the bark on the tree for insects. The longer the family climbs the girl notices the ground is rockier and the trees are not as tall. They made it to the top, but they are not the only ones.
